Chapter 2
Bai Li asked, “I heard from Wenyao that you’re usually quite independent, that you can cook and do laundry yourself?” Zhao Kaile nodded.
Bai Li asked again, “You can use basic office software proficiently?”
Zhao Kaile nodded again.
She asked a few more somewhat personal questions after that, then stopped.
“Alright, introduce yourself.” Bai Li pointed at the sofa across from her. “Sit.”
The female assistant came over and nudged him, saying softly, “Don’t be nervous, just say whatever. Give me your resume.”
Zhao Kaile glanced at Zhan Hang and noticed that the other person’s expression was extraordinarily foul, so he nervously withdrew his gaze. After handing over his resume, he stammered, “I, my name is Zhao Kaile, a fresh graduate from the Chinese Literature Department of AA University… I’m 22 years old this year… When I have nothing to do normally, I, I like to write a bit…”
“Wenyao said your grades are pretty good, that you’ve always received scholarships.” Bai Li asked, “How did you end up thinking of coming here to be a personal assistant?”
Zhao Kaile understood that Li Wenyao had not explicitly stated the reason in order to preserve his personal dignity, so he answered awkwardly, “Personal reasons.”
Bai Li nodded understandingly, then turned to Zhan Hang and said, “Zhan Hang, is this OK? I think he’s fine, just a bit shy. Not a major problem.”
“Whatever.” Zhan Hang put his sunglasses back on, raised an eyebrow, and said irritably, “I’m leaving. Waste of time.”
Bai Li followed him and said, “There’s still a dinner party tonight. That movie I mentioned to you last time, have a meal with the director…”
The two walked out one after another. Zhao Kaile let out a long breath, a bit of cold sweat seeping from his palms. The female assistant came over and smiled at him, “‘Whatever’ means it’s fine. I told you not to be nervous.”
“This person is really…” Zhao Kaile couldn’t find the right word for a moment and gave up. He turned to the female assistant and said thank you.
“You’re welcome. My name is Lu Jiayin.” The female assistant said, “I’m two years older than you. Call me Sister Jiayin. Come sign the confidentiality agreement, you know how it is.”
Zhao Kaile said thank you again with a grateful smile, took the pen as instructed, and began signing the confidentiality agreement.
Lu Jiayin said, “The monthly salary is ten thousand after tax, room and board included. Normally you’ll be responsible for taking care of his daily needs, and you’ll follow him throughout filming, variety shows, attending events… That’s roughly it.”
When Zhao Kaile heard the monthly salary of ten thousand, he nearly snapped the pen tip. He nodded with tears in his eyes, thinking to himself that this was wonderful, life still had some hope.
On the way out of the company, Lu Jiayin chattered in his ear about some details of Zhan Hang’s daily life, including when he needed to drink water, when he needed energy drinks, and how many times a day the two Munchkin cats at his home needed their litter scooped.
Zhao Kaile felt a bit intimidated, “I also need to take care of cats?”
Lu Jiayin said, “Yes, Brother Hang often posts photos of the two little ones on Weibo. They’re adorable, it’s just that their poop smells a bit.”
Zhao Kaile had been bitten by a stray cat before and still had some psychological trauma, so he hesitated for a moment.
Lu Jiayin asked, “What’s wrong?”
Zhao Kaile was silent for a moment, thought about the massive debt his scoundrel of a brother owed, and calmly said, “Nothing, cats are great.”
Lu Jiayin laughed again, “Don’t take what just happened to heart. He probably thought you would be very excited to see him, but you didn’t react much, so he got angry.”
“Hahaha…” Zhao Kaile laughed along with her, thinking to himself, damn, this guy is so arrogant. I’m someone who doesn’t follow stars or mix in the entertainment industry, how would I know who he is.
Lu Jiayin said, “Brother Hang is very talented, he just hasn’t encountered a drama that could explode in popularity. You should learn more about him, it will help with your own work in the future.”
“Yes, yes, I will.” Zhao Kaile nodded cooperatively, took out his phone and looked up Zhan Hang’s resume, and discovered something magical — Zhao Kaile had more or less watched some of the TV dramas Zhan Hang had acted in, and songs he had sung would occasionally play on the school broadcast, yet Zhan Hang himself had not left the slightest impression in Zhao Kaile’s memory.
He had watched them, but simply couldn’t remember. Occasionally when a drama became slightly popular, and people searched the supporting cast list for who played what role, they would suddenly realize, so Zhan Hang played so-and-so in such-and-such drama and also played so-and-so in such-and-such drama this was the general impression most people had of Zhan Hang.
Fortunately, he was only twenty-five this year. To have such a foundation at this age was already quite remarkable. As long as he encountered a good drama with the right timing, location, and people, and a role that suited him very well, he should be able to explode in popularity.
“There’s a rumor in the industry that any drama Brother Hang stars in will flop.” Lu Jiayin said softly, “So he hates it most when people say he’s destined to be a supporting character. Be a bit careful in front of him, and you also can’t call him a pretty boy, or use words like sissy, effeminate, things like that.”
Zhao Kaile, “Understood…”
Anyway, as long as he minimized communication and treated work as the top priority for twenty-four hours a day, he should be able to avoid unnecessary friction with this ticking time bomb as much as possible.
Lu Jiayin looked at him with a smile, “That’s about it. Then Brother Hang will be entrusted to you from now on. Go pack the things you need to bring. Come here at five o’clock, a driver will take you over.”
Zhao Kaile, “Yes, yes, goodbye Sister Jiayin.”
After watching Lu Jiayin’s car disappear into the distance, Zhao Kaile finally realized he seemed to have left something behind. He turned back to see Li Wenyao charging furiously toward him, and delivered two solid punches to his skull.
Zhao Kaile howled in pain while holding his head, then burst into loud laughter, “I found a job! I passed the interview!”
Li Wenyao put his arm around his neck and said speechlessly, “You idiot… Let’s go, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
The scorching summer had just begun. Graduates from various majors at the school were leaving one after another. Some honestly boarded the journey home, some had long planned to establish a firm foothold in this city, and some looked blankly around, clutching their resumes and running everywhere, facing the empty beds at night and feeling sad alone. Those like Li Wenyao, the rich second generation, blew air conditioning and surfed the internet, or went on spontaneous graduation trips, still carefree and playing around like before.
After eating, Zhao Kaile packed up in the dormitory and discovered his belongings were really not many. The most valuable things were that second-hand laptop and the phone on him.
Li Wenyao walked him to the school entrance, scratched his face, thought for a long time, then patted his shoulder and said, “Work hard, young man. If you can’t take it, you can come back to find me. I’ll try to make it big in my dad’s company…”
Zhao Kaile laughed, “Enough said, Brother Yao, give me a hug.”
Li Wenyao made a sound of agreement, cooperatively hugged him, then turned around handsomely and clattered back to the dorm in his flip-flops.
Zhao Kaile watched his carefree retreating figure, made a cool farewell gesture, and also resolutely rushed toward the future he had never imagined.
At eight in the evening, Zhao Kaile successfully checked in and moved into the luxury mansion in Building Q, District A, under Lu Jiayin’s guidance.
“Brother Hang just finished filming a drama recently, so these days he’s relaxing and resting.” Lu Jiayin took him around upstairs and downstairs, walking and talking, “This is Brother Hang’s bedroom. Don’t go in casually.”
Zhao Kaile asked in confusion, “But if I don’t go in, how do I clean?”
Lu Jiayin laughed, “Heavens… a place this big, did you think you’d be cleaning it all by yourself? Housekeeping will be called in regularly.” She walked to the spiral staircase and pointed at a door, “This room is for you. Someone has already tidied it up. Go in and take a look.”
Zhao Kaile awkwardly cleared his throat, went in to take a look, turned on the light, and was shocked again what the hell is this an assistant’s room?! This is already a hotel-level luxury night view room! What virtue and ability do I have to live in a room of this caliber?!
Lu Jiayin completely couldn’t hear his inner thoughts, casually put his things down inside, went out and continued introducing, “Let me show you KIKI and TITI’s room.”
Zhao Kaile was immersed in the shock from just now, tearfully following behind her, completely not listening to what she said next.
“Kaile?” Lu Jiayin laughed and cried at the same time, “Zhao Kaile!”
Zhao Kaile came to his senses.
Lu Jiayin took him to the third floor, stood before a huge glass wall, and pointed at two fluffy balls inside, saying, “They are two little brothers. The orange one is KIKI, the white one is TITI. From now on, you scoop the litter twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Feed them cat food the same way, fixed times and fixed amounts.”
Zhao Kaile said cautiously, “Understood, I’ll do it well.”
Lu Jiayin checked the time and said, “It’s about that time now. Go in and scoop the litter.”
Zhao Kaile, “Um… huh?”
He hesitantly looked at the two little ones inside. KIKI curiously pressed against the glass wall examining him, two round dark eyes, but after just a few glances at the unfamiliar visitor, it found it boring and walked away flicking its tail. TITI was lazily sleeping in its cat bed, seemingly with no intention of waking up.
Very good, neither of them looked aggressive.
Zhao Kaile tiptoed in, looked left and right, and walked toward an oval-shaped large basin. Lu Jiayin laughed wildly behind him, “No… that’s their bathtub. This little house is the litter box.”
“…” Zhao Kaile looked in shock at the small house that reached his waist and had an extremely refined and luxurious exterior design, experiencing a second wave of shock — what the hell is this a cat toilet?! This is more refined than the figurine I saved three years of living expenses to buy!
He trembled as he picked up the litter scoop, lifted the door curtain, and began the first litter scooping of his life.
Lu Jiayin kicked the trash bin a bit closer, pinched her nose and said with a laugh, “Mentally prepare yourself.”
“OK.” Zhao Kaile nearly fainted, “Ugh…”
So stinky!!!
Because the scooping process was too painful, his memory became a bit fuzzy. He tied the garbage bag shut and let out a long breath.
KIKI walked over and circled around him twice, then tilted its head and began rubbing against his pant leg.
Lu Jiayin couldn’t resist squatting down to pet it, “Baby, so cute~”
TITI woke up, crouched in the corner vigilantly examining the stranger, its ears twitching twice, its gaze following Zhao Kaile’s movements back and forth. KIKI found Lu Jiayin’s petting not comfortable enough, so it lay on the ground and wriggled twice.
At this moment, Zhao Kaile’s heart was instantly struck hard — awsl… Could such stinky poop really have come from these two?
He reached out to touch KIKI. The little one didn’t wait for him to come, but actively moved its head to rub against his palm. Zhao Kaile was thus completely subdued, his eyes turning into hearts and drooling with desire.
“Can I kiss them…”
Lu Jiayin was about to stop him when a male voice suddenly sounded coldly from behind the two of them, “No.”
