Chapter 3: Sharing a room
Thian’s arm injury was gradually improving. It wasn’t clear whether it was due to good medicine or good care.
Two weeks had passed since the marriage intended to ward off bad luck, or perhaps a near-death experience, for the inspector. Everything was kept secret, so much so that no one suspected a thing.
The agreement between the two was clearly defined: the two silver rings would only be worn in front of Thian’s mother. Mangkon himself hadn’t moved into the Piromsomorn house, so wearing the ring wasn’t necessary. In everyday life, they would act as just colleagues. No ring would appear on their ring finger to alert suspicion.
“Inspector, are you going today?” Captain Nadol asked in Thian’s personal office.” “Of course, I wouldn’t miss it.”
“You can go ahead. I’ll follow.”
Today, Ronapop, the drug lord, would be brought in for questioning. Even though he was a big boss, he believed there were still endless layers and connections beneath the surface. Getting familiar with the vicious cycle of drug trafficking, especially transnational drug trafficking, had become a never-ending loop.
Before heading to the central prison, Thian didn’t forget to call his close friend, Phuwin, the inspector at Mae Sai district.
(“Hey, calling early.”) “Can’t I call?”
(“Yeah, but you took my junior! I haven’t even had a chance to deal with you yet.”) “You mean Mangkon?”
(“Yeah, why the sudden transfer? Don’t think I don’t know it’s because of your mother.”) Phuwin only knew it was an order from Khunying Pharada, but didn’t know the real reason.
“I don’t know what my mom’s up to, but I’ll take good care of Mangkon. No ant will crawl on him. No gnats will swarm him, promise!”
He knew how much Phuwin cared for this junior officer because ever since Thian’s “fortune-telling wife” had moved in, he had been texting non-stop. He thought of him as Mangkon’s second father.
(“Don’t corrupt my junior.”)
“Come on, what’s wrong with showing him a few beautiful sights?”
(“Thian! Don’t you dare flirt! Or maybe you’ll lose interest in big boobs and become interested in each other Police officers!”) After all, being with police officers is a good thing. Like Officer Lukplub, who Phuwin is madly in love with now.
“Dream on! I don’t do people in the same profession.” That would never happen!
And that sentence elicited laughter from the other end of the line. The playful banter was pleasant and easygoing before Thian mentioned today’s mission.
“Today, I’ll be investigating Ronapop at the central prison.”
(“Seriously, I think there’s someone bigger.”) Phuwin adjusted his tone. These drug trades are usually done as a process and in network.
“Why do you think so?”
(“From experience.”) I’m tired of Experienced Police officers
(“Yeah, they’ve caught the guy who shot you. He’s a hired gun. He says he shot the wrong person.”)
“Huh? Wrong person!”
(“Yeah, what do you think? You should make merit/good deeds. It’s your bad luck year!”)
“Shit!” The curse word escaped silently in his mind. Utter, utter bad luck. Getting shot by the wrong person was incredibly infuriating. His sharp mind began to consider his mother’s
words. Was it really just his bad luck? But he’d already gotten married to ward off the misfortune.
“Yeah, thanks a lot. Keep handling dealing with it.”
The incident from just now was making Thain a little upset. He had to be injured for months because of something that shouldn’t have happened. He shook his head slightly to shake off the annoyance and grabbed his car keys to leave for work immediately.
Today’s interrogation of Ronapop was at the Chiang Mai Central Prison, located in Mae Taeng district, forty-six kilometers away. The young inspector drove for about an hour to reach his destination. As soon as their commander appeared, the officers saluted out of respect.
“Has Captain Nadol arrived yet?” “Yes, sir.”
“I’m going in.” “Understood.”
The prison had high, tightly closed fences surrounding it on all sides. The tall figure of one hundred ninety-two centimeters walked inside to the innermost investigation room.
Nadol had arrived earlier. When Captain Nadol saw that the Inspector had arrived, he gave a respectful salute and reported on what he had investigated.
“He hasn’t opened his mouth, sir.”
“It’s alright, I’ll handle it myself. You can leave.”
Nadol nodded and walked outside. Now, it was just Thian and the drug dealer in the small white square room, which was completely undecorated. There wasn’t even a window to let light in. There was only a large table in the center of the room.
Hardened black eyes looked at the face of the person who was also staring at him. He still had a blank expression, refusing to open his mouth.
“Are you going to talk?” Silence.
“I’m giving you a chance, Ronapop.” Speaking to these types of people didn’t require manners.
It hadn’t yet gotten to the point of force or using tools. There were many types of suspects. Some were afraid of the consequences, quickly confessing everything. Some were stubborn,
no matter how hard you tried to extract information. However, nothing was beyond Thian’s capabilities.
Thump
The sound of a fist hitting the table once. At the same time, he calmly sat across from Ronapop. Ronapop smirked slightly and still refused to speak.
“Are you the biggest boss here?”
“Someone will come to help me.” And that first word came, and he finally said something, but his voice was clearly strange. It sounded muffled, like something was stuck under his tongue.
“Are you dreaming?” “Hee.”
And with the instinct of a police officer who is observant, Thian took only a fraction of a second to see the abnormality. Instincts immediately warned him that there was something suspicious in his mouth. And without hesitation, he quickly lunged forward.
“What are you hiding in your mouth?” The tall figure approached him and used his hands to pry open the puffy mouth. But at that moment, Ronapop bit down on something, breaking it. Suddenly, frothy white cloudy saliva flowed out. He was writhing in agony.
Fucking hell! Son of a bitch “Someone outside, come help me!”
The curse word came. He had committed so many sins for so long, he couldn’t die this easily. Besides, he needed to extract as much information from him as possible. But while attempting to help save the drug dealer’s life, the writhing Ronapop thrashed and bit Thian’s hand hard. Saliva mixed with poison stained his sleeve.
“Dammit!”
His body reacted, causing him to flinch and stumble back, hitting the edge of the table hard. People outside rushed in to help, creating chaos in the room. The young inspector tried to regain his composure and give orders, but he also needed to go to the hospital right away, as the toxin could affect his body.
In the emergency room, filled with the murmuring of the medical team and busy staff, Thian was taken care of. But the young inspector’s face still had a wide smile and sneakily sent charming glances to the beautiful nurses.
The physical exam was conducted urgently, but from initial symptoms, there was nothing alarming. The patient was still smiling, showing no unusual symptoms, and even seemed to be doing well enough to flirt with the girls smoothly.
Mangkon arrived before anyone else when he heard the news and arrived just as the doctor was announcing the test results.
“The toxin didn’t affect the body, but I’d like you to stay overnight for observation.”
“I’d like to do a more detailed examination, just to put both of our minds at ease, okay?” “Yes, doctor.”
The police sergeant stood listening quietly, but the fake husband was quite the opposite. The twinkling eyes he gave to the nurse were oozing with sweetness. Mangkon could only sigh wearily.
“The nurse will take you to your room now.”
“I’d be delighted. With such a beautiful person taking care of me, I’ll recover faster.” And he didn’t miss a chance to say sweet words.
The VIP room on the top floor of the new building was Thian’s room to spend the night while being monitored. He changed into his clothes and prepared everything. Before the nurse left, he still couldn’t help but tease.
“If you need anything, just press the call button.” “Can I press it if I want love?”
Mangkon was stifling laughter and coughed lightly. This was a thirty-four-year-old flirting technique?! It was incredibly cheesy.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing. It’s just, do you think you’ll get a girl with lines like that?” “It’s good if I do, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter, you know?”
“I’ll teach you someday, beautiful round-faced people like you are loved by girls.”
“Please, you may flirt girls yourself. A real Casanova cannot be denied. So sure of himself.”
Mangkon sat down on the guest sofa, wondering why Ronapop did something like that. What was the root cause, but before he could ask anything, a low voice interrupted, as if knowing his thoughts.
“If he didn’t commit suicide, then it was ordered.” Thian said in a serious tone. It was a possible indication from the experience of handling large cases that had always assumed.
Either he committed suicide because he didn’t want to suffer in prison, or he was ordered to be killed because he was no longer useful.
“And which do you think it is, sir?”
“It’s possible both. We have to investigate further.”
“Can I join you?” The police sergeant offered because he really wanted to work on the case.”
“It’s better to leave this case to someone else. I want you to join on tracking down the Black Bull gang.”
“The Black Bull gang?” Creak
Before he could explain anything more, the door was opened along with an 8-tube loudspeaker volume sound, Which didn’t comes from of anyone but Thian’s mother.
Her face showed the utmost frustration, as if she was possessed. Without waiting for anyone to start the conversation, she spoke first.
“Mangkon, move into my house immediately tomorrow.'”
“Wh-What did you say, mom?” The person who answered wasn’t the one whose name was called, but instead the good-for-nothing son.
“It’s because you two are so far apart that you get hurt again, Gear!”
She exhaled a strong breath, her sharp eyes examining her son’s face. His left arm, which was shot, hadn’t healed yet, and now his right arm had teeth mark from a criminal who swallowed poison. She couldn’t stand for this. Her son couldn’t get hurt anymore.
“Why are you stressing yourself out, Mom? It’s an unforeseen circumstance. It can happen.”
Her son was trying to reassure his mother. Whether they lived near or far apart, getting hurt was normal in cases like this. He was a policeman. Getting hurt was bound to happen.
“That’s what I’m saying! Because you two live in different places, things like this can happen. If Mangkon is always near you, I believe things like this wouldn’t happen.”
“But we met during the day, Mom!” The young inspector was starting to get annoyed. He already got married to Mangkon, what more could she want!
“But daytime isn’t enough. You two have to sleep in the same room.”
“Mom…” Thian tried to argue, but her words were immediately interrupted.
“Don’t argue. Tomorrow, have Mangkon move out of the police residence and into my house.” The madam declared sternly, her eyes full of a determination that no one dared to refuse.
As for Mangkon, his eyes widened in shock, trying to help with the attempt. “Uh… Madam, but…”
“No buts, Police Sergeant Mangkon”
The madam cut him off, the gaze in her eyes directed at her son-in-law and the tone of her voice used to respond were so gentle, as different as heaven and earth compared to when she was talking to her son.
“It’s settled, my two sweethearts.”
Shit! This word popped into both of their minds. Mangkon really didn’t want to share a bed and board with Thian. It looks like Thian was having his freedom restricted again and was taking another step in the wrong direction.
It’s over…
