Chapter 4: Dog protection sticks

Belongings were being moved from the police residence to the beautiful, grand mansion of Piromsomorn. Mangkon was without choice; one could say he was reluctantly surrendering.

He sat, pondering the decision he had made. Was he putting himself in a difficult position? While the Madam had indeed ordered his transfer to Chiang Mai, no one could force him to agree to marry Inspector Thian if he hadn’t consented himself.

Sigh. Mangkon couldn’t decide.

A sigh escaped him periodically. The one arranging his belongings was deep in thought. He had to become a roommate with the Inspector. Fortunately, the other’s bedroom wasn’t too cramped, with a walk-in closet divided into zones, so the visitor didn’t feel too guilty about intruding on personal space.

Personal belongings were neatly arranged to save space. Even so, there was one thing he was still conflicted about: sharing a bed with the playboy Inspector. After negotiating since morning, it was to no avail. Thian reasoned:

‘If you sleep on the floor, what will happen if my mom comes in at night? She wants us to act like we’re in love so much; help me show that we love each other.’

Show that we love each other, huh? We don’t actually love each other. How will it even come across?

It wasn’t as though he’d never been in love. He’d had a girlfriend he dated for a long time until just before entering the police academy. The reason they broke up was because she said he looked like someone without a future. But it was just an excuse for someone who wanted to find someone better.

“Hey, are you done arranging your things yet?” A low voice spoke, snapping Mangkon, whose mind had been elsewhere, back to reality.

“I don’t have much stuff, Inspector.”

“Then go take a shower and go to sleep. I’m getting sleepy.”

The round eyes glanced at the wall clock, which showed ten o’clock sharp. It was reasonable to be sleepy. Mangkon obediently did as he was told, carrying a pajama with a little bear pattern into the bathroom. From this day on, for the next six months, he had to get used to sharing a room with someone.

Ugh, just bear with it. It’s only six months.

Time slowly passed until it was time for bed. The light in the room was still on. But before he could turn it off, there was a sudden knock on the door, three times in all, followed by the door opening before permission was given. And in that instant, the tall man quickly pulled the smaller man’s arm down onto the bed, but ended up falling on top of him.

“Ins…Inspector!”

“Oops, am I interrupting something?” “Too sweet.”

The first image that Pharada saw caused a smile to lift at the corners of her mouth with satisfaction. Her son was in a position hugging his wife. She found it truly endearing. It seemed that having Mangkon move into the house would help develop their relationship in a positive direction. Right now, they were married in a fake way, but she hoped it would become real someday, because she really liked this daughter-in-law.

This was an era that changed with the times. Pharada was a modern mother who didn’t limit who her son could love. The beautiful women who had come before, almost none of them were to her liking. They seemed to be the types who were just after Thian’s money.

This one, Mom approves.

“Did you need something, Mom? My wife and I are going to sleep now.” And the word “wife” had a direct effect on Mangkon’s little heart. His smooth, gentle face was flushed for no reason.

“My, calling each other ‘wife and husband’ so readily. I won’t disturb you then.” “Good night, my children.”

Once the door closed, the embrace from before hadn’t been released. A pale hand had to hit him to make the Inspector aware once, but it was still ineffective.

“Inspector, you can let go now.” “You want me to let go, huh?”

“Don’t say weird things, Inspector’s mother is gone.” “Okay, okay.”

In truth, Thian secretly felt good about the fragrant scent from the raven black hair. The soft, sweet body scent of someone who had just finished showering was captivating. Even the waist he had embraced earlier, although not small and delicate like a woman’s, was strangely soft and easy to hold.

“Inspector, don’t cross the line. I’m going to sleep on the left side.”

Mangkon lifted a long, soft pillow to put it in the middle as a boundary between them. But the old fox didn’t answer, just made a mischievous face and winked, indicating that he understood, and then lay down and stretched lazily.

“You be careful you don’t end up hugging me in the middle of the night.”

“As if! Who would want to hug you?” The answer was barely a whisper, as if mumbling to himself. But someone with good hearing could hear it, as always.

“You were secretly badmouthing me. I heard you.” “Good night, Inspector. Please turn off the light.”

The “wife” ignored the teasing and gave an order. The beloved “husband” readily complied. Today was another tiring day with so many things going on. In the end, the body just needed

to rest. It was impossible to tell who would fall asleep first, but the (fake) newlyweds were drifting off to dreamland.

.

.

.

The new morning arrived. Soft sunlight filtered through the dark curtains into the room. The warmth touched the skin, causing the police officer to stir slightly. However, something on the bed was different from the night before. The long pillow that was used to create a

boundary-who knows where it had fallen? At this moment, the wife rested agains his husband’s broad chest. And then the person who usually woke up early slowly opened his eyes.

“Mmm.”

A groan sounded softly in his throat, but in the next second, his round eyes suddenly widened because the hard thing his head was resting on wasn’t a soft pillow, but…

Thian’s chest. Shit!

His heart, which shouldn’t be beating fast so early in the morning, was thumping to welcome the new day. First, he had to calm down. The smaller man slowly moved back, while watching the person who was sleeping soundly all the time. He prayed in his heart, “Please don’t wake up yet,” and he succeeded.

That’s the end of it.

A smile appeared on his gentle face with pride. Instead of getting out of bed as usual, that didn’t happen. Mangkon secretly let his eyes wander, surveying the handsome face of Thian, who was asleep in front of him.

What kind of crazy person is handsome even when they’re asleep?

It was as if this flawless face was predestined. The prominent nose suited the sharp facial structure. Especially the distinct jawline made the face look dimensional. Even the closed eyelids and the steady breathing still exuded an alluring charm.

“So unfair, really.”

The junior officer could only be envious and quickly looked away when he realized he had been staring too long and his heart was beating for no reason. Even though he told himself to stop, he secretly glanced again and mumbled softly,

“I can’t really take it, he’s too handsome.”

.

.

.

Breakfast was prepared neatly on the long wooden table. There was the sweet scent of hot rice porridge and toast freshly out of the toaster. Mangkon, who had come down first, was invited to sit by Pharada. Thian, who followed down, looked a little dazed. He wasn’t usually one to eat breakfast, but today he couldn’t avoid it.

“Gear, Mangkon, come eat breakfast, children.” “And, Gear, you go to work with Mangkon.” “Yes, Mom.”

The two sat down to eat together. In the silence, there was only the sound of spoons gently hitting plates. However, the hawk-eyed mother noticed something strange with the empty ring finger on the left hand of both of them.

“Where are the rings? Gear, Mangkon?” She deliberately said it in a soft voice, but with a certain feeling that sent shivers down the listener’s spine.

Thian paused immediately. His spoon stopped in mid-air. His sharp eyes glanced at his mother before turning to Mangkon, who was sitting stiffly beside him.

“Uh, well…”

“It’s not necessary to wear them Mom,” the older one quickly interjected. There was no need to lie, since it really isn’t necessary to wear them.

“If you don’t wear rings like this, how will the ghosts believe you’re married?”

Mangkon, who had been sitting quietly, was startled. The old lady’s words made him burst out in his mind,

“Oh… what is this crazy thing!” He glanced at the inspector next to him, who was almost frustrated.

“Mom…” Thian tried to explain, but was immediately cut off.

“No buts! Go get them and put them on right now, both of you!” Pharada’s commanding voice echoed like a royal decree. In the end, no one dared to object.

Wearing the wedding rings would only happen inside the house. This was a limitation set by Thian. As soon as they stepped past the doorway, they disappeared from each other’s left ring fingers as if they never existed.

‘We will only wear the rings when we are in the house. Understand?’ ‘Absolutely no wearing them outside.’

These were Thian’s requests or commands.

Today, work seemed particularly lively. The topic of Roanapop became a major issue. The Superintendent of the Chiang Mai Provincial Police Station assigned other police officers to investigate the cause, while Thian had an even more important case.

“Mangkon, today, you come and work in my office.” “Yes?” His duty had begun.

“I feel pain in both arms. I have no strength.” “Uh, yes.” He must really be sick.

Throughout the time that Mangkon was helping the higher-ranking officer clear documents, he felt like he was being watched intensely. At first, he didn’t want to say anything, but then he started to feel uncomfortable, unable to not blurt out.

“Can you stop staring?””

“My eyes, do you have a problem with them? Ha! Annoying!” “Yes, I have a big problem with them. I’m uncomfortable.” “Then solve the problem yourself.”

“Are you trying to start something, Inspector? Are you too free? Why don’t you come and help me.” Thian, who liked to bicker, had met an opponent with a similar personality like Mangkon.

“And what are you going to do about it, wife?” “‘Wife’ in name only, in case the Inspector forgot.”

The young inspector enjoyed arguing back and forth. The voices started to get loud outside but were interrupted when a female worker came to inform him that someone wanted to meet Inspector.

“Ms Praewa wants to meet you, Inspector.”

“Praewa?” Who’s that? His dark eyes showed a hint of suspicion. He was trying to remember.

“She said she’s someone special to the Inspector.” And then Thian understood immediately, that woman he had his eye on before going on duty in Mae Lai.

The handsome face looked at Mangkon before walking over and whispering softly in his ear, just enough for the two of them to hear.

“Can you please put on the ring?” “Yes?”

“Consider it helping me.”

“Let her come in,” the young inspector turned to reply to the female worker who was waiting. Even though he didn’t understand much, the younger man agreed to do as he was asked.

Not long after, about three minutes later, a woman walked in. Her face was as beautiful as a star, and she was dressed to emphasize her chest area, which was prominent.

Inspector’s type, huh? Pale skin, beautiful, small-featured face, big boobs like this.

“P’Thian, why didn’t you answer Praewa? Praewa missed you,” as she got close, the woman clung to Thian’s arm.

“I have to apologize to you, Praewa, but my wife is very possessive.” “Wife? Who?”

The word “wife” was spoken loud and clear, along with a strong hand that peeled the woman’s hand off. Then, he moved to pull Mangkon’s slender waist close and moved his hand to grasp the smaller hand. After that, he lifted it to show off the matching rings.

“This is my wife. I’m already married.”

“Don’t tease me like this. Stop kidding around.” The beautiful woman backed away slightly, not believing what she was seeing. Thian getting married to a man?

“I’m not kidding. Don’t you believe me?” Smack!

Soft cheek was immediately pressed by curved lips. If until it’s fragrant the namesake husband cannot endure, wishing to try one more time. He kissed on the sweet cheek a second time causing the light-brown eyes to widen. Soft cheeks started to turn a faint red. Realizing that he’d just become the inspector’s human shield, Mangkon fully got in character.

This is too much.

The smaller man wasted no time and reacted, automatically raising his hand to pinch the older man’s back, all while feigning a bright smile , playing along.

“My husband likes to show his love like this regularly. I must apologize.”

The woman was standing still, shocked. Her lips hung open in disbelief, before sending out a high-pitched, ear-piercing scream. She didn’t want to accept it.

“Aaaa, no way can this be true, P’Thian.” “Totally valid, Praewa.”

“I can’t accept it. I can’t accept that you like men.” “I want you to, Praewa.”

With those final words, there was no need to ask any further. Praewa stomped her high heels on the ground and quickly walked out of the room, causing someone to breathe a sigh of relief, but didn’t look at the other person to see how annoyed he was.

“Can I punch the Inspector just once?” “You want to punch me?”

“Yes, maybe a lucky punch will help him dream well.”

“Hum, then you punch me, but can I have another kiss?” Because the scent from just now was still lingering in his nose.

The sly face combined with the seductive voice… he couldn’t believe how shameless this inspector was.

Just explode! Can the world end today? Can we just finish it today?
