The Second Young Master’s Obedient Husband : Chapter 65
On the way back, Su Qingyu did not speak at all, only clinging close to Liang Yu. When they reached the courtyard gate, Liang Yu handed the reins to Shuanzi to settle the ox, then led Su Qingyu into the courtyard.
Su Qingyu followed Liang Yu like a little tail, step for step. They went into the room, Liang Yu closed the door, and walked toward Su Qingyu.
Su Qingyu raised his head, looking at Liang Yu with pleading eyes. He had just opened his mouth to speak when tears fell.
Liang Yu reached out and pulled him into his arms. Su Qingyu buried his face in Liang Yu’s chest and cried for a long while before his emotions eased somewhat. Choking back sobs, he said, “Husband… I…”
“Do not say it.”
Su Qingyu shook his head, his tears flowing even harder. He wanted to say sorry, wanted to say it was all his fault, wanted to say… but he was crying too hard to get anything out.
Liang Yu lowered his head and kissed the top of his head, comforting him, “It is only a few years later. I can wait.”
Su Qingyu raised his tear blurred eyes to look at him. Liang Yu took out a handkerchief from his chest, grayish blue in color, embroidered with a fierce looking wolf. This was the first gift Su Qingyu had given him, and Liang Yu had kept it close to his body ever since. With one hand cupping Su Qingyu’s face, he carefully wiped away his tears.
“Do not let Mother and Father know about this. It would only make them worry for nothing.”
Su Qingyu was startled by his words. Liang Yu lowered his head and kissed his face.
“If they knew, they would overthink things. We know the situation ourselves. Life goes on as usual.”
“It would also save them from nagging and making you uncomfortable.”
Su Qingyu nodded and buried himself back into Liang Yu’s embrace, wrapping his arms around Liang Yu’s lean waist, holding him tight, not willing to leave even a bit of space between them.
That evening, Liang Yu brewed the medicine. The dark, murky medicinal soup gave off white steam, and the bitter smell filled the whole room. Su Qingyu took it and drank it all in one go, frowning at the bitterness. Liang Yu popped a piece of malt sugar into his mouth.
Su Qingyu leaned against him, feeling the sweetness slowly spread from the tip of his tongue to the bottom of his heart.
Liang Yu reached out and poked his puffed up cheek. “Did you hear what the doctor said?”
Su Qingyu nodded, chewing on the sugar, the sweet fragrance drifting from between his lips and teeth, looking both obedient and sweet.
Liang Yu lowered his gaze to look at the little one in his arms, his heart overflowing with fondness. He kissed his lips and said, “The doctor said to nourish yourself for a few years, so we will nourish you properly. Getting your health back, making your body strong, that matters more than anything.”
Su Qingyu bit the sugar and mumbled, “But… the child…”
Liang Yu pressed his thumb against his lips, his palm cupping his chin, the bridge of his tall nose rubbing against his soft cheek. The tenderness in his eyes could not be suppressed.
“The child can wait. You are what matters most.”
Su Qingyu’s tears could no longer be held back, and teardrops fell one by one, each kissed away by Liang Yu.
After quite some time, Su Qingyu suddenly asked, “Husband, do you… do you blame me?”
“Blame you for what?”
“That you could survive well and come before me, that is enough for me.”
That evening, after dinner and washing up, Su Qingyu sat on the bed doing needlework as usual, waiting for Liang Yu to come in. When Liang Yu entered, Su Qingyu put away his needlework and curled up in Liang Yu’s arms, clinging to him dependently.
After a while, Su Qingyu spoke up, “Husband, how long do you think I will have to drink this medicine?”
Liang Yu held him, listening quietly until he finished speaking, then thought for a moment and replied, “Until the doctor says you do not need to drink it anymore.”
Su Qingyu leaned against him in silence for a while, then spoke again, “What if… what if after drinking it for a long time, it still…”
Before he could finish, Liang Yu lowered his head to look at him, kissed his lips for a while, and said seriously, “Drinking medicine is for your health, not for a child.”
Su Qingyu was stunned. He tugged at Liang Yu’s clothes, looking up at him with his little face. “Husband, what will we do in the future if we do not have children?”
“No children means no children.”
Liang Yu bit his cheek, and Su Qingyu covered the spot where teeth marks had been left, glaring at him on instinct.
Liang Yu looked at the little one who had returned to his lively, baring claws and fangs manner, and laughed softly. The careful, cautious look Su Qingyu had in the afternoon was nothing compared to how vivid and beautiful he was now.
Liang Yu kissed the back of his hand and said with a smile, “With children, the two of us live. Without children, the two of us still live. What, do you look down on me?”
Su Qingyu went soft and flopped into his arms, mumbling, “That is not it… I am just afraid…”
Liang Yu pinched the cheek flesh that spilled out from where he was lying, “Afraid of what? Afraid I will not want you?”
Su Qingyu said nothing, only raised his face to look at him.
Liang Yu flicked his forehead with a bent finger, making Su Qingyu cover his forehead and glare at him with puffed up cheeks.
Liang Yu smiled and stroked him, “How silly. With a little brat around, it would still have to fight me for your attention. I would not even want that.”
Su Qingyu was startled. His face flushed red again, and he forgot about being angry. Propping himself up on Liang Yu’s chest, he leaned over to kiss him, smiling sweetly.
After a while, Su Qingyu suddenly remembered something and asked, “Then what about Mother and Father?”
“I will handle it.”
Liang Yu pinched him, “I will talk to Mother and Father. You do not need to worry.”
“Husband, you are so good.”
“Good that you know it.”
Su Qingyu’s eyes curved into crescents as he kissed his lips once more.
That night, the two of them held each other and talked for a long time.
Su Qingyu completely opened his heart, leaning against Liang Yu’s chest and chattering away. Liang Yu only listened quietly, his heart aching for all the bad things his little one had been through. They relied on each other and would never part again.
The night gradually deepened. Liang Yu held Su Qingyu and fell asleep. Su Qingyu leaned against Liang Yu’s chest and closed his eyes, but he could not summon any sleepiness.
Su Qingyu opened his eyes and looked at the moonlight streaming in through the window. His thoughts gradually drifted away. He suddenly remembered the days of fleeing famine when he was small. Back then it was cold and hungry, watching his parents save the last bite of food for him, his heart both sour and bitter.
Later, they had finally found a place to settle down, and life was looking up, but then his father was gone, and his mother’s eyes were worn out from strain. He alone held up that family, not knowing what tomorrow would bring.
Now, lying in this warm embrace, thinking of these things, he suddenly felt that all that suffering did not matter anymore.
Su Qingyu raised his head and looked at Liang Yu’s profile. The moonlight fell on his face, softening those sharp, distinct contours. His breathing was steady, and he slept deeply.
Su Qingyu watched for a while, then gently leaned in and kissed his chin, his eyes curving into a smile. He settled comfortably in Liang Yu’s arms, closed his eyes, and gradually fell asleep.
…
Once those medicines were fetched back, Su Qingyu did not skip a single day.
Every morning after getting up and washing up, the first thing Su Qingyu did was brew medicine. The bitter smell of the medicine drifted out, and Su Qingyu wrinkled his nose at it, but still pinched his nose and drank the whole bowl clean.
After he finished drinking, Liang Yu would hand him a piece of malt sugar or candied fruit, letting the little one whose face was all scrunched up from bitterness sweeten his mouth.
Once Su Qingyu had recovered from the bitter taste, he smiled at Liang Yu, stood on tiptoe, and kissed Liang Yu’s lips, exchanging a sweet, medicine flavored kiss with him.
All the bitterness and sweetness, Su Qingyu wanted to share with him. But he could not bear to let him taste the bitterness too, so he would sweeten his mouth first and then go kiss him. That would do just fine.
