The Villainous Male Supporting Character Courts Death Every Day : Chapter 36
“You know I’m a duke’s son, so you should know how serious this is.” Milo clicked his tongue quietly, immediately lifting his chin and putting on an extremely haughty air, his golden eyes sweeping sideways with full authority: “About last night, you didn’t tell anyone, did you?”
Valke saw that the boy was in good spirits, clearly fully recovered now, and felt relieved. Seeing his showy manner, he found it somewhat amusing: “What are you afraid I’ll say? If you’re talking about the spot where you threw up all over the place, besides me and your servant, no one else knows.”
“Is that the matter I’m talking about?” Milo stamped his foot in anger. Thinking of the duke’s stern face, he had no time to worry about the NPC’s rudeness and pressed urgently: “You didn’t tell anyone you saw me, right?”
“Hmm…” Valke held his chin and thought carefully, and just when the boy was about to explode from anxiety, he raised the corner of his mouth and smiled: “No, I didn’t mention it to anyone.”
“Hmph, good that you know your place.” Milo let out a breath of relief, then put on a fierce face and threatened: “If even a whisper gets out, I’ll hold you accountable. Believe me, you don’t want to experience my methods. You’ll be in over your head.”
A glint of amusement flashed in Valke’s eyes, as if he were wondering what methods the young master might have, but then he heard Milo say again: “Give me your name. I’ll remember it.”
Valke’s smile froze, and this time he truly paused. He walked a straight path and had nothing to hide, yet now he felt somewhat hesitant.
The duke’s son didn’t know who he was right now, but once he found out, could he still speak to him so easily and naturally? Thinking of those golden eyes possibly looking at him with strange, curious gazes, he felt inexplicably stifled.
Valke froze for a moment, then finally turned his head away as if nothing had happened and said: “My name is Valke.” He spoke as if to a mirror-like lake, though the corner of his eye watched the boy’s expression.
“Valke?” The boy was indeed stunned, his golden eyes turning as he looked at Valke’s iron-black skin, slowly realizing something, his gaze shifting from surprise to confusion, then to sudden understanding, yet still disbelieving: “Really Valke?”
“Why would I lie to you? I am Valke.” Valke’s eyes darkened, and he frowned and turned away. After a while, he couldn’t help it and turned back to look at Milo and asked: “What’s wrong? Do you know me?”
“You’re from the North…” A foreign invader. Milo mumbled, his lips moving, but ultimately not uttering a single word, though he was screaming inside.
Originally, Milo had been confined and cut off from the outside world, plus with his own tendency to avoid things, he hadn’t paid much attention to the northern war. Besides the time the guard captain mentioned it, he knew very little.
But the name Valke was different. Milo not only knew him, but also knew that after his own death, Valke would be the first to die too.
If the duke’s son’s death was the key push that made the male lead decide to take action against the ducal estate, then Valke was the key stepping stone that turned the male lead’s fate around.
A foreign invader from the North, the brutal Iron-Blooded Wolf King.
The original story didn’t clearly explain Valke’s background. Milo only knew he was an enemy from the North, a fierce foreign tribe that nearly wiped out Osei in one go.
He didn’t know that behind the original story, it was Valke who had wandered around the empire for three months without finding any place, returned to the snow plains, and by chance refined ice iron, causing his combat power to soar. He not only reclaimed lost territory and dominated the snow plains, but also rapidly expanded and unified the major tribes of the North.
When Osei sent magnificent iron-clad cavalry and officials to negotiate with him using the usual political methods, granting him territory and a knighthood, he who had once traveled to the royal capital and witnessed the empire’s extravagance and corruption firsthand, unhesitatingly beheaded the messenger and marched his army south.
He became the enemy from the North in the original story, the barbaric foreign invader—the Iron-Blooded Wolf King. Iron referred to their iron-black skin and their tough, sharp weapons; blood referred to his cruelty and brutality, leaving devastation and rivers of blood wherever he went.
He was Osei’s nightmare, the beast that destroyed the empire’s prosperity.
As for the fact that the Iron-Blooded Wolf King was once a friend of the snow plains, the son of a chieftain in the eyes of the royal capital, these unimportant details were not explained in the original story. Therefore, the only thing Milo knew was that the name Valke,
was one of his own.
Though he wasn’t sure whether to classify him as a supporting character cannon fodder or a villain, anyway, anyone who opposed the protagonist group counted as one of his own. And like him, they were both tool-like cannon fodder that boosted the male lead, which made them incredibly close. Milo was excited as if seeing an idol, almost wanting to shake Valke’s hand.
He knew that although Valke ultimately failed, in the battle to defend the royal capital, he was lured by Kyle’s scheme and trapped in a dangerous situation. But he was fierce and ruthless, fighting through layers of encirclement, and even while heavily wounded, he fought a life-or-death battle with Kyle, heroic and tragic, moving and admirable. With a final ruthless strike before death, he even left Kyle with a lifelong condition of weather-related pain.
He was practically the first blood. Although not a strategic character, which put him at a disadvantage in a political intrigue novel, in terms of combat prowess and bravery, he ranked among the top. Having him carry the opening of the male lead’s counterattack was more than enough weight.
When the male lead climbed onto the city wall covered in blood, holding high the Iron-Blooded Wolf King’s head, all of Osei was stirred. Generals and knights shouted loudly, crying out Kyle’s name; nobles and common people embraced and wept. From then on, the tide of war turned, and Kyle’s black whirlwind fought all the way back to the North, becoming the empire’s foremost black hero.
The times make the hero. Without Valke’s sacrifice, who knows how many years Kyle would have had to wait to turn things around. It was also because Valke was such a powerful boss that he created an immortal legend for the dragon slayer. Even in the future when Kyle reached the pinnacle, the Iron-Blooded Wolf King remained one of his glorious achievements, his head preserved with antiseptic for people to admire and worship the greatness of the black hero.
Such a powerful enemy was practically the light of tool characters worship! So much worship! An epic exit, with lingering aftershocks envy! So much envy!
But at this point in time, he wasn’t on the northern battlefield; how could he be here? Could he be a spy? Excellent! Too excellent! No wonder yesterday he was a social NPC and today he was an estate worker NPC he was a sleeping dragon hidden in shadow, here to gather intelligence and conduct espionage.
His golden eyes drifted uncertainly. A sense of excitement at touching something forbidden made the young master unusually nervous, his heart pounding like a little deer, his cheeks flushing with rosy clouds, his words stammering with a bit of shyness: “You… just told me like that? Is that something you can say?”
“Weren’t you the one who asked?” Valke raised an eyebrow. Seeing Milo’s bashful manner, not knowing what was going through the boy’s head, he also felt uncomfortable: “Anyway, you’ll know sooner or later, so telling you doesn’t matter.”
“Is… is that so?” Was he talking about eventually sweeping across the continent and making a name in the empire? Wow! Such grand ambition, such powerful momentum truly worthy of being the strongest stepping stone in his heart. Milo admired him even more.
His golden eyes shone like stars. Now with the Wolf King filter turned on, he suddenly felt the man before him was tall and imposing, with an overwhelming presence that made people afraid to look at him, yet he couldn’t help stealing a few more glances.
Valke had been carefully observing Milo’s reaction. The boy didn’t show any strange gaze, which let him breathe a sigh of relief. But those little eyes glancing back and forth, sweeping over him like feathers, occasionally even staring at him with deep affection, was an indescribable strangeness that made his whole body inexplicably hot.
More bashful than a mature noblewoman, more passionate than a proper young lady as if there were no curiosity or wild imagination, only pure admiration and longing.
He thought Milo must have heard some strange rumors or reports to be acting so oddly. His chest felt tight and blocked with irritation, yet mixed with faint anticipation and nervousness.
Perhaps he didn’t care what the royal capital nobles thought, but at this moment, he particularly wanted to know what Milo was thinking. He wanted to explain that he didn’t grow up eating iron ore, yet he also wanted to ask if he had heard of his heroic battle records galloping across the snow plains.
For a moment, neither spoke, yet both had chaotic thoughts, many questions they wanted to ask, yet not knowing how to begin, afraid of asking too much or asking poorly, thousands of words stuck in their throats, their expressions changing unpredictably.
Valke held it in for a long time, finally stiffly spitting out a sentence: “Let’s just say I’m making a friend with you. There’s nothing to hide between friends.”
“That’s right, making a friend works too.” The Iron-Blooded Wolf King actually wanted to be friends with him wow, wow. Milo was overjoyed, smoothly inserting: “Then remember this, I’m Milo. If you run into any trouble, just tell me, and I’ll do my best to help.”
Valke laughed: “Just now you were saying you’d make me in over my head, and now you’re saying you’ll help me.”
“These don’t conflict. If you leak information and betray me, I’ll naturally hold you accountable. If you keep your promise, as a friend, of course I’ll help you.” Besides, you’re one of my own, so I naturally have to look out for you.
Milo smiled brightly as he stared at Valke, staring until a barely noticeable flush appeared on that iron-black face. Valke turned his head away, scratching his nose: “That won’t be necessary. You should take care of yourself.”
Seeing the man clearly looking down on him, Milo wasn’t displeased; instead, he somewhat understood. His eyes turned and he said: “You’re alone in the city, and a foreigner at that you must have times when you can’t stretch out freely. This friend won’t stand by and do nothing.”
What Milo was thinking was that as a spy, wandering around the royal capital with such highly recognizable black skin was definitely dangerous, but he couldn’t expose that, so he used friendship as a cover. But to Valke’s ears, this young master was like a flower understanding speech, piercing right through his worries in a single sentence.
Valke considered himself a man of heroic spirit, yet now he was being comforted by an ignorant noble young master. He felt emotional in his heart, yet also moved. Only after a long while did he say: “Having your kind intentions is enough.”
“Here, I’m not someone who makes empty promises. This… let this serve as a token, given to you.” Milo extended his hand, and without waiting for Valke’s reaction, stuffed it directly into the man’s hand. “My promise is here, with this as proof. If you need anything, come find me, and I’ll make good on it.”
Valke only felt a soft, warm touch on his hand that slipped away in an instant, rather disappointingly, but his hand now held a diamond bow tie. In the center of star-like scattered diamonds was embedded a golden-yellow colored diamond the size of a bird’s egg, brilliant and dazzling, as fiery and bright as those golden eyes.
Valke looked up and saw that Milo’s bow tie had somehow been pulled off, his collar open, revealing a large expanse of snow-white neck.
Milo had thought it through carefully. He estimated that spy Valke wouldn’t stay in the royal capital for long. Today’s chance encounter would likely be their last meeting. He wanted to give something, but if he directly gave gold or gifts, it would easily raise suspicion, and the other might not accept it either. So he simply removed his bow tie, pretending it was a token.
Anyway, by the time Valke next came to the city, the young master would have already exited the stage. Who would still be there to make good on any promise? Saying it was a token, it was actually financial aid.
This yellow diamond bow tie was just an ordinary luxury item with no family crest, very easy to sell off. If he were unfortunately caught, bribing a few soldiers would be enough it would always be useful somewhere. In the end, it was just a small gesture from one tool person to another.
Milo was quite pleased with his own cleverness here, but Valke just lowered his head and said nothing. Seeing his hesitation, Milo thought he didn’t recognize the value of the item and quickly promoted it: “This is a fancy vivid yellow diamond, crystal clear and flawless. Though a small item, it is also a rare treasure.”
Valke looked at the brilliance in his palm, the golden dazzle almost burning. He didn’t know what game the city people were playing, but in the tribe, giving away personal belongings was no casual matter.
“Where I’m from,” Valke finally spoke, his voice hoarse and low, carrying the weight of a snow plain storm: “If someone gives their personal item to another, it is taken very seriously. Either it is a blood brother, or it is…”
He stopped halfway, his brow furrowing, seemingly afraid of frightening the boy before him. But the boy just smiled, shining brilliantly in the sunlight: “That works too. If you don’t mind, may I call you brother?”
The boy spoke lightly, yet with utter sincerity.
Valke examined him, silent for a moment, then suddenly reached up and removed an iron ore pendant from around his neck, hanging it around Milo’s neck and carefully adjusting the clasp.
“Since it’s like this, then let’s exchange tokens. This is something I carry with me. In the future…” He stopped here, his throat rolling, his voice dropping even lower, changing his words: “I will make good on it. This way, you and I are even.”
Milo lowered his eyes and looked at the pendant on his chest. Though rather large and polished smooth, it appeared to be the same material as the North’s donation gifts not anything particularly rare so he accepted it with a clear conscience.
Holding it up to examine it, the cold gray-blue pendant was carved with a tribal totem, its edges worn and mottled from years and war. He could almost see the Wolf King leading thousands of troops, galloping and charging, which made the boy inexplicably yearn for it, his blood stirring with excitement.
Milo happily clutched it to his chest, golden light brilliant in his eyes, dazzling Valke for a moment.
“This thing is so cool!” Milo’s tone rose, the tail of his voice full of uncontainable delight. “I mean, it’s wonderful, I really like it. Thank you, brother!”
Valke looked at the boy’s radiant smile, so full of spirit and dazzlingly bright. His gray-blue pupils reflected the golden light, as if a single spark had been buried in the ice and snow.
A strange feeling flowed from his heart somewhat warm, somewhat soft, somewhat swollen and heavy, yet also somewhat hot and prickling. He didn’t know what this feeling was, but he thought he might never forget this moment for the rest of his life.
